Being the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf, The Open Championship commences on the 20 July and ends on 23 July. 

 

Current champion Henrik Stenson won in 2016 with a record breaking score of -20. 

 

17 October 1860 was when The Open was first played at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. The original trophy presented to the winner was a red leather belt with a silver buckle called the ‘Challenge Belt.’ These days there is a cash prize for the winner and this year’s prize fund is £1.4m however will be paid in dollars for the first year ever, translating to $1.85m.
